All About Depression Treatments

Anyone’s life can be ruined by depression. No matter how old are you, it does not spare you. When you are young, depression can leave a big scratch of psychological and social scars that you will forever bear. The most used on these techniques is cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy works by teaching an individual on depression to learn new set of behaviors and ways of thinking which they can use in dealing with their everyday lives.

On the other hand, biological treatments work by prescription of medicines. The major medication considered in a biological treatment is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Prozac (flouxetine) is one of the most famous. Zoloft (sertraline) and Celapro (escitalopram) are another examples of SSRIs. These biological treatments function by providing individual high concentrations of serotonin which fight their depressed moods. SSRIs are the most considered antidepression treatment because of their mild side effects aside from the fact that it is the medication with the broadest effect on the symptoms showed by depression.

When an individual does not respond to the above treatments, the last resort would be ti used electroconvulsive therapy. Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT works by electrically stirring up seizures for therapeutic effects. This is made only when all other treatments are not serving. This treatment is very quick and effective and is very helpful in situation such as catatonic depression where in the patient is failing to take any kinds of food which can ultimately outcome to death. It is also very helpful in situation where suicide is seen as hope to come out from a depression. ECT is only used when situations are bordering on hopeless. This is because outcome of ECT is not yet fully studied.

The above discussed treatments are only a part of depression treatments. There are also alternative means of treating depression. Parts of these alternative treatments are acupuncture, exercise, and music therapy. Acupuncture helps in aiding people with depression by its ability to make the body produce high level of endorphins which makes the body produce a feeling of well-being. Exercise works by giving off physiological effects that help contradict depression. It is also helpful in reducing stress which can be a factor for depression. And finally, music therapy helps by the ability of music to induce different set of moods. Studies have shown that there are certain areas in the brain particularly the sub-cortical centers that are reached by music. This helps depression by breaking off unhealthy emotions. There are many depression treatments available. It’s a matter of how you call for help.
